Bacalao

La palabra de hoy es: 'bacalao' = cod.

The Spanish noun, 'bacalao' is a masculine noun of Basque origin. In Spanish, 'bacalao' is the name given to cod, both as fish species and food (dry/ salt cured and fresh cod).


There are some common Spanish expressions with the noun 'bacalao' in them, for example:
  •  Aceite de hígado de bacalao (cod liver oil)
  • Bacalao seco (cured cod)
  • Bacalao al pilpil (cod cooked in olive oil with garlic and chili-traditional Basque dish)
  • Bacalao de Escocia (cod from Scotland-considered to be of higher quality)
  • Cortar el bacalao (to call the shots)
  • "Te conozco bacalao" ("cannot fool me")

Examples of the use of the noun 'bacalao' are:
  • El bacalao al pilpil está muy rico (cod  "a la pilpil" is a very tasty dish)
  • Aquí, Manolo es quien corta el bacalao (Here, it is Manolo who calls the shots)

Please note that the alternative spelling 'bakalao' is commonly used to refer to a genre of 1980's Spanish electronic music.
