Where Are You?

SCENARIO

Imagine you are talking on the phone to a relative, a friend or a colleague. The other person is trying to establish where you are at this moment. He/ she decides to ask: "where are you?".

He/ she could choose to be a bit less formal and say:
¿Dónde estás?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be a little bit more formal and say:
¿Dónde está usted?

OUR TIP

You DO NOT need be concerned about the degree of formality in the question you are asked. Whether the other person uses the more/ less formal question is irrelevant to your choice of answer. Your answer depends only on what you want to say. There are many different ways in which you could answer this question. Perhaps you want to choose between saying that you are:
  • At home
  • At work
  • In a specific town/ city/ country
  • At a well known place

Here are some examples which deal with those basic possibilities:
  • Estoy en casa (I am at home)
  • Estoy en el trabajo (I am at work)
  • Estoy en Madrid (I am in Madrid)
  • Estoy en el estadio de Wembley (I am at Wembley stadium)

Now you should practice answering the question:
¿Dónde estás?
