Today's WOTD is: "freno" = brake

In Spanish, the noun "freno" is a masculine noun of Latin origin, the meaning of which, in motoring, is brake. The noun, "freno" is often used in its plural form, “frenos”:

The word "freno" relates to the action word/ verb "frenar" to brake.

Some commonly used expressions containing the words "freno" are:

• Disco de freno (brake disk).
• Echar el freno de mano (to put the handbrake on).
• Freno de mano (handbrake).
• Frenos asistidos (power brakes).
• Frenos de aire (air brakes).
• Frenos de disco (disk brakes).
• Frenos de tambor (drum brakes).
• Frenos dentales (dental braces).
• Frenos neumáticos (air brakes).
• Poner el freno (slow down/ to stop/ to bring to a halt).
• Poner el freno de mano (to put the handbrake on).
• Quitar el freno de mano (to take the handbrake off).
• Revisar los frenos (to check the brakes).
• Quedarse sin frenos (to have a failure of the brakes).
• Tambor de freno (brake drum).

Some examples of the use of the words "freno" or “frenar”are:

• Tenemos que cambiar los discos de freno (we have to change the brake disks -in the car).
• Tenemos que cambiar los tambores de freno (we have to change the brake drums -in the car).
• Ahora, echa el freno de mano (now, put the handbreake on).
• Ahora, pon el freno de mano (now, put the handbreake on).
• Ahora, quita el freno de mano (now, take the handbreake off).
• Este coche es muy antiguo y no tiene frenos asistidos (this is a very old car and doesn't have power brakes).
• Estos camiones tienen frenos de aire (these lorries have air brakes).
• Estos camiones tienen frenos neumaticos (these lorries have air brakes).
• Los coches de hoy en día tienen frenos de disco (nowadays cars have disk brakes).
• Algunos coches modernos todavía tienen frenos de tambor (some modern cars still have drum brakes).
• La semana pasada me pusieron frenos dentales (las week I had dental braces fitted).
• Hay que poner el freno a los abusos de poder (The abuse of power must be stopped).
• Hay que frenar a los abusos de poder (The abuse of power must be stopped).
• Hay que revisar los frenos con frecuencia (the brakes need to be checked often).
• De repente, me quedé sin frenos (suddenly, I lost the brakes/  discovered the brakes weren't working).
