What Music Do You Like?

Introduction

This post deals with talking about likes and dislikes in general, and the music you like or dislike in particular.

SCENARIO

Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend or a colleague. You are talking about personal choices on music. At some point, the other person says to you something like: "what music do you like?"

In Spanish, the other person could choose to be less formal and say:
¿Qué música te gusta?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:
¿Que música le gusta (a usted)?

OUR TIP
The question is an invitation for you to say what music you like/ don't like. When stating what you like/don't like, you DO NOT need to be concerned about the level of formality in the other person's question. Your main concern should be about communicating what music you like/ don't like. Perhaps you want to say that:
  • You like some specific music (single);
  • You like some specific music (plural);
  • You like a list of music items;
  • You don't like some specific music (single);
  • You don't like some specific music (plural);
  • You don't like a list of music items;

Here are some examples of how you could say what music you like/ don't like:
  • Me gusta la música clásica (I like classical music);
  • Me gustan los boleros (I like boleros);
  • Me gustan los boleros, la música clásica y las rancheras (I like boleros, classical music and 'rancheras');
  • No me gusta la música clásica (I don't like classical music);
  • No me gustan los boleros (I don't like boleros);
  • No me gustan los boleros ni la música clásica ni las rancheras (I don't like boleros nor classical music nor 'rancheras');

Now you should practice answering the question:
¿Qué música te gusta?
