Calzada


Today's WOTD is: "calzada" = road

In Spanish, the noun "calzada" is a feminine noun of Latin origin the main meaning of which is road. The noun calzada is often used to refer to the paved part of a road (carriegeway) distigushing it from from the road verges/ pavement.

In Spanish “calzado”*/ "calzada" may also be used as describing word/ adjective meaning someone wearing footwear (the opposite to barefoot).

*NB The word “clazado” also exists as a masculine noun, meaning footwear.

Some commonly used expressions containing the words "calzada" or “calzado” are:
  • Águila calzada (booted eagle);
  • Calzadas romanas (Roman roads);


Some examples of the use of the word "calzada" or “calzado” are:
  • Prohibido estacionarse el la calzada (stopping on the carriegeway is not allowed).
  • El águila calzada es una especie amenazada (the booted eagle is an endangered species);
  • En España hay muchas calzadas romanas (in Spain there are many Roman roads).
  • Pedro va muy bien calzado (Pedro is wearing very good footwear);
  • Ana va muy bien calzada (Ana is wearing very good footwear);
  • Pedro y Ana van calzados con botas (Pedro and Ana are wearing boots);
  • Busco una tienda de calzado (I am looking for a shoe shop);
