Today's word is: "carril" = lane

In Spanish, the noun "carril" is a masculine noun of Latin origin which nowadays is mainly used to refer to each one of the lanes* on modern multi-lane roads/ motorways. It should also be noted that the Spanish noun “ferrocarril” (railway) is derived from the more traditional meaning of the noun “carril”, which is track.

Some commonly used expressions containing the words "carril" are:

• Carril central (middle lane in a three lane road);
• Carril de adelantamiento (overtaking/ fast lane);
• Carril de bicicletas (cycle path/ lane);
• Carril de la derecha (right hand lane/ side of the road);
• Carril del medio (middle lane in a three lane road);
• Carril de la izquierda (left hand lane/ side of the road);
• Carril número dos (the middle lane-USA/ three lane highway);
• Carril número uno (the fast lane-USA);
• Carril número tres (the slow lane-USA/ three lane highway);
• Carril rápido (the fast lane-USA);

Some examples of the use of the word "carril" are:

• Vamos por el carril central (we are travelling on the middle lane);
• Vamos por el carril del medio (we are travelling on the middle lane);
• Vamos por el carril número dos (we are travelling on the middle lane-USA/ three lane highway);
• Vamos por el carril rápido (we are travelling on the fast lane);
• Vamos por el carril número tres (we are travelling on the slow lane-USA/ three lane highway);
• En el Reino Unido el carril de la derecha es el carril de adelantamiento (in the UK the right hand lane is the fast lane);
• En España el carril de la izquierda es el carril de adelantamiento (in Spain the left hand lane is the fast lane);
• En Estados Unidos el carril de la izquierda es el carril número uno (in the USA the left hand lane is lane number one);
• En Estados Unidos el carril rápido es el carril número uno (in the USA the fast lane is lane number one);
• Este es el carril de bicicletas (this is the cycle path/ lane);

*Note

The noun “carril” is not normally used to refer to a country lane.
