Introduction
This
post deals with hours
of business
in general, and more specifically with the closing
times
of banks.
SCENARIO
Imagine
you
are talking to a relative, a friend or colleague. The other person
wants to know when banks close and says to you:
"at
what
time do banks close?"
In
Spanish, the other person could say:
¿A
qué hora cierran los bancos?
OUR
TIP
The question is an
invitation for you to state the time at which the banks close for
business. Your answer will depend on whether or not you know the
closing time for the banks. Perhaps you want to state:
- Banks closing times
- A specific bank's closing hours
- That you don't know at what time banks close
Here are some
examples of how you could reply:
- Cierran a las dos (they close at 2:00)
- Los lunes, cierran a las dos (on Mondays, they close at 2:00)
- De lunes a viernes, cierran a las dos (Monday to Friday, they close at 2:00)
- El banco de la esquina cierra a las dos (the bank on the corner closes at 2:00)
- No sé a qué hora cierran (I don't know at what time they close)

Please note the difference between the expressions of time used in these answers and typical expressions used in telling the time, such as:
- Es la una y media (it is half past one)
- No sé qué hora es (I don't know what time it is)
