What Are You Going To Buy In The Stationary Shop?

Introduction

This post deals with shopping in general, and with things you may want to buy in a stationary shop in particular.

SCENARIO

Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend or colleague. You are about to go shopping. and are making a shopping list. The other person says to you: "what are you going to buy in the stationary shop?"

In Spanish, the other person could choose to be less formal and say:
¿Qué vas a comprar en la papelería?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:
¿Qué va a comprar (usted) en la papelería?

OUR TIP

Answering is quite straightforward. Naming something you can buy in a stationary shop should be sufficient. You may also want to indicate the quantity/ amount of what you intend buying.

Here are some examples of what you could buy in a stationary shop:
  • Un lápiz (a pencil);
  • Un cuaderno de papel rayado (a lined writing pad);
  • Una caja de lápices de colores (a box of coloured pencils);
  • Un bolígrafo (a ballpoint pen);
  • Un tubo de pegamento (a tube of glue);
  • Un rollo de cinta adhesiva (a roll of sticky tape);
  • Una grapadora (a stapler);
  • Una caja de grapas (a box of staples);
  • Una caja de 'clips' (a box of paper clips);
  • Una carpeta (a folder/ file);
  • Una papelera (a waste-paper basket);

Now you should practice answering the question:
¿Qué vas a comprar en la papelería?
