Who Is With You?

SCENARIO
Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend or a work colleague on the phone. The other person perhaps thought you were on your own. It transpires that you are not, so he/ she becomes curious and says to you something like: "who is with you?"

In Spanish, the other person could choose to be less formal and say:
¿Quién está contigo?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:
¿Quién está con usted?

OUR TIP
The question is an invitation for you to say the name of the person who is with you. When giving the name of another person, you should not have to worry about the level of formality in the original question. Often, when responding to questions like this one, just giving the name might be sufficient. However, you could easily be more informative with very little additional effort.

Here are some examples of how you could reply (assuming the person with you is a male, Pedro Botero- a common friend):
  • Pedro Botero (está conmigo) (Pedro Botero is with me);
  • Don Pedro Botero (está conmigo) (Mr. Pedro Botero is with me);
  • El señor Botero (está conmigo) (Mr. Botero is with me);
  • Nuestro amigo Pedro Botero (está conmigo) (our friend Pedro Botero is with me);
  • Nuestro amigo don Pedro Botero (está conmigo) (our friend Mr. Pedro Botero is with me);
  • Nuestro amigo el señor Botero (está conmigo) (our friend Mr. Botero is with me);

Here are some examples of how you could reply (assuming the person with you is a female, María Botero- a common friend):
  • María Botero (está conmigo) (Maria Botero is with me);
  • Doña María Botero (está conmigo) (Mrs. Maria Botero is with me);
  • La señora Botero (está conmigo) (Mrs. Botero is with me);
  • Nuestra amiga María Botero (está conmigo) (our friend Maria Botero is with me);
  • Nuestra amiga doña María Botero (está conmigo) (our friend Mrs. Maria Botero is with me);
  • Nuestra amiga la señora Botero (está conmigo) (our friend Mrs. Botero is with me);

Now you should practise answering the question:
¿Quién está contigo?
