Mejora


Today's WOTD is: "mejora" = improvement

In Spanish, “mejora” is a feminine noun of Latin origin, which means improvement. The noun “mejora” is also often used as legal term, meaning in terms of inheritance, a special bigger share of an estate. Also meaning improvement/ recovery is the related feminine Spanish noun, “mejoría”.

The noun “mejora” is related to the comparative describing word/ adjective “mejor” which means better and the superlatives “el mejor”/ “la mejor”/ “lo mejor”, which mean the best.

A related action word/ verb is “mejorar”, commonly used with the meaning to improve.

Some examples of the use of the word "mejoría" or related words are:
  • El enfermo ha experimentado una ligera mejoría (the patient has improved slightly);
  • El enfermo ha experimentado una mejoría notable (the patient has experienced a significant improvement);
  • A lo mejor llegamos antes de anochezca (maybe/ with a bit of luck, we arrive before it gets dark);
  • Así te queda todo aún mejor (that way it is all even better for you);
  • Así te queda todo bastante mejor (that way it is all much better for you);
  • De todo eso, cuanto más mejor (as for all that, the more the better);
  • Tenemos que dar lo mejor de nosotros mismos (we have to give our best);
  • Lo hicimos de la mejor forma (we did it the best possible way);
  • Lo hicimos de la mejor manera (we did it the best possible way);
  • Dejas lo mejor para el final, ¿no? (you are saving the best for last, aren't you?);
  • Ese es el secreto mejor guardado (that is the best kept secret);
  • En el mejor de los casos saldremos hoy (in the best case scenario we will leave today);
  • Hoy en día, nuestra situación va a mejor (nowadays our situation is improving);
  • Lo mejor está por llegar (the best is still to come);
  • Mejor dicho, no sé si conseguiré terminar esto (put in another way, I don't know if I will manage to finish this);
  • Ahora nos va todo mejor que nunca (for us now all is going better than ever);
  • La mejora contínua es esencial para nuestra empresa (continuous improvement is essential to our business);
  • El buen vino mejora con los años (good wine improves with age);
  • Mejorar esa oferta es mejorar lo inmejorable (to improve that offer is akin to improve the unimprovable/ is impossible);
  • Deberías pensarlo mejor (you should think again about it);
  • Piso en venta al mejor postor (apartment for sale to the highest bidder);
  • María ha salido beneficiada en el testamento con la mejora (the will makes María the beneficiary, a larger share of the estate);
  • Existe un buzón de quejas y propuestas de mejora (there is a complaints and improvement suggestions box);
  • Si consigues llegar antes de anochezca, tanto mejor (if you manage to arrive before it gets dark, so much the better);
