Had You Wanted To Go Travelling?

SCENARIO
Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend or a work colleague. You are talking about things you had wanted to do some time ago. You appear to suggest that at that time, you had wanted to go on a trip. The other person wants confirmation of what you appear to have said and says to you something like: "had you wanted to go travelling?"

In Spanish, the other person could choose to be less formal and say:
¿Querías viajar?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:
¿Quería (usted) viajar?

OUR TIP
The question is an invitation for you to say what you had wanted to do at some point in the past. When saying what you had wanted to do, you should not need to be concerned about the level of formality in the original question. Your main concern should be about saying what you had wanted to do.

Here are some examples of how you could reply:
  • Sí, quería hacer un viaje (yes, I wanted to go travelling);
  • Sí, quería viajar por el mundo (yes, I wanted to go travelling round the world);
  • Sí, quería ir a las Canarias (yes, I wanted to go to the Canary Islands);
  • No, no quería hacer un viaje, quería descansar (no, I didn't want to go travelling, I wanted to rest);
  • No, no quería hacer un viaje, quería quedarme en Madrid (no, I didn't want to travel, I wanted to stay in Madrid);

Now you should practise answering the question:
¿Querías viajar?
