Plato


Today's WOTD is: "plato" = plate


In Spanish, “plato” is a masculine noun of Latin origin, which means plate. The noun “plato”* may also be used to refer to:


  • In food preparation/ cooking, a dish
  • In food/ serving, a course
  • In food/ quantities a plateful/ a serving/ a helping
  • In the clay pigeon shooting sport, target

*NB Please note that the diminutive form “platillo” is often used to refer to a saucer/ similar small dish. Please be aware also that the Spanish word “plató”, spelled with an accent on the last -o and therefore pronounced differently, is an unrelated word of French origin which is often used to refer to a film set/ TV studio.

Some commonly used expressions with the word “plato”:
  • Huevos al plato (eggs en cocotte/ baked eggs/ shirred eggs);
  • No ser plato del gusto de alguien (to be someone or something disliked);
  • Pagar los platos rotos (to carry the can);
  • Plato combinado (combination/ combo dish);
  • Plato de postre (dessert plate);
  • Plato del día (dish of the day);
  • Plato fuerte (main course/ starring act/ main attraction);
  • Plato hondo (deep/ soup plate);
  • Plato llano (flat plate/ platter);
  • Plato sopero (soup/ deep plate);
  • Primer plato (first course);
  • Plato de la casa (hose speciality- dish);
  • Rebañar el plato (to wipe the plate clean)
  • Segundo plato (second course);
  • Ser alguien plato de segunda mesa (to feel overlooked/ passed over);
  • Ser plato del gusto de alguien (to be someone or something which is liked);
  • Tiro al plato (clay pigeon shooting);

Some examples of the use of the word "plato" are:
  • Los huevos al plato están riquísimos (the eggs en cocotte/ baked eggs/ shirred eggs are very nice);
  • Se nota que tener que esperar no es plato de tu gusto (clearly you don't like having to wait);
  • La culpa no fue de Pedró, pero él acabó pagando los platos rotos (it wasn't Pedro's fault, but he ended up carrying the can);
  • Ese bar es famoso por sus platos combinados (that bar is renown for its combination/ combo dishes);
  • Necesito comprar platos de postre (I need to buy dessert dishes/ plates);
  • El plato del día está muy bien (the dish of the day is very nice);
  • El plato de la casa está muy bien (the house speciality is very nice);
  • El plato fuerte fue la actuación del ventrílocuo (the main attraction was the ventriloquist's performance);
  • Necesito comprar platos hondos (I need to buy deep plates);
  • Necesito comprar platos llanos (I need to buy flat plates/ platters);
  • Necesito comprar platos soperos (I need to buy deep plates/ soup plates);
  • El primer plato está muy bien (the first course is very nice);
  • Mira si estaba rica la salsa que acabé rebañando el plato (as a sign of how nice the sauce was, I ended wiping the plate clean);
  • El segundo plato está muy bien (the second course is very nice);
  • A nadie le gusta ser plato de segunda mesa (nobody likes to feel ignored);
  • Se nota que estudiar español es plato de tu gusto (clearly you like studying Spanish);
  • Cerca de aquí hay un campo de tiro al plato (there is a shooting range clay target field in the vicinity);
