SCENARIO
Imagine
you are talking to
a relative, a friend or a work colleague. You are talking about some
of the things you had wanted to do. Talking about your decision to
start learning Spanish, the other person
says to you something like: "were
you wanting
to learn Spanish?"
In
Spanish, the other person could choose to be less formal and say:
¿Querías
aprender español?
Alternatively,
he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:
¿Quería
(usted) aprender español?

The
question is an invitation for you to say what you wanted to do. When
saying what you wanted to do, you should not need to be
concerned about the level of formality in the original question. Your
main concern should be about saying what you wanted to do.
Here
are some examples of how you could reply:
- Sí, quería aprender español (yes, I wanted to learn Spanish);
- Sí, quería estudiar gramática española (yes, I wanted study Spanish grammar);
- Sí, quería aprender las reglas de ortografía (yes, I wanted learn the spelling rules);
- Sí, quería practicar el español (yes, I wanted to practice Spanish);
- No, no quería aprender el español, quería estudiar historia de España (no, I didn't want to learn Spanish, I wanted to study Spanish history);
