Tijera


Today's WOTD is: "tijera" = scissor

In Spanish, “tijera” is a feminine noun of Latin origin, which means scissor. In a similar way to English, the plural form “tijeras” is very often used in Spanish also.


Some commonly used expressions with the word “tijera” are:

  • Cortado por la misma tijera (the same as one another -cut from the same cloth);
  • Catre de tijera (folding camp bed);
  • Escalera de tijera (stepladder);
  • Media tijera (half scissor -a special kick in football/ soccer);
  • Meter la tijera (to cut);
  • Piedra, papel o tijera (rock, paper, scissor -game)
  • Ser una buena tijera (to be a good gossip);
  • Ser una buena tijera (to be scandalmonger);
  • Ser una buena tijera (to be sharp tongued);
  • Silla de tijera (folding camp chair);
  • Tijeras de coser (sewing scissors);
  • Tijeras de podar (secateurs);
  • Tijeras para la uñas (nail scissors);

Some examples of the use of the word "tijera" are:
  • Vosotros dos estáis cortados por la misma tijera (you two are cut from the same cloth);
  • Ese catre de tijera no parece muy cómodo, ¿verdad? (that folding camp bed doesn't look very comfortable, does it?);
  • Tengo una escalera de tijera para tareas de bricolaje (I have a stepladder for DIY jobs);

  • Tu amiga es una buena tijera, ¿verdad? (your friend is a scandalmonger, isn't she?);
  • Tu amiga es una buena tijera, ¿verdad? (your friend has a sharp tongue, hasn't she?);
  • Nos compramos unas sillas de tijera muy cómodas para el jardín (we bought some very comfortable folding camp chairs for the garden);
  • ¿Me dejas las tijeras de coser, por favor? (can I borrow your sewing scissors, please?);
  • ¿Me dejas las tijeras de podar, por favor? (can I borrow your secateurs, please?);
  • ¿Me dejas las tijeras para las uñas, por favor? (can I borrow your nail scissors, please?);
  • ¿Me dejas las tijeras podadoras, por favor? (can I borrow your secateurs, please?);
