Pantalón

Today's WOTD is: "pantalón" = trouser

In Spanish, “pantalón” is a masculine noun of French origin, the main meaning of which is trouser.

The plural form "pantalones" is also often used to refer to a single garment/ item.

Some expressions with the word “pantalón” are:
  • Amarrarse alguien los pantalones (to brace oneself to face a challenge);
  • Bajarse los pantalones (to give in/ perform a humiliating climb down);
  • Falda pantalón (culottes);
  • Llevar los pantalones (to wear the trousers/ to be the boss);
  • Llevar bien puestos los pantalones (to wear the trousers/ to be the boss);
  • Pantalón* bermudas (Bermuda shorts);
  • Pantalón* bombacho (knickerbocker);
  • Pantalón* corto (shorts);
  • Pantalón* de brincacharcos (cropped pants);
  • Pantalón* largo (long trousers);

Some examples of the use of the word "pantalón"are:
  • Amárrate los pantalones que ahora viene lo duro (brace yourself, the hard bit is just about to hit us);
  • Ya no quieren que les dé la razón, lo que quieren es que me baje los pantalones (they don't just want me to accept they are right, what they want from me is a humiliating climb down);
  • Esa falda pantalón te favorece mucho (you look great in those culottes);
  • María es quien lleva los pantalones (the boss is Maria);
  • María lleva bien puestos los pantalones (the boss is Maria);
  • Esos pantalones bermudas son muy cómodos, ¿no? (those Bermuda shorts are very comfortable, aren't they?);
  • Los pantalones bombachos suelen ser amplios y cómodos (knickerbockers are usually loose fitting and comfortable);
  • Los pantalones cortos se suelen llevar sólo en verano (shorts are often worn only in summer);
  • Se ponen de moda los pantalones de brincacharcos (cropped pants are becoming fashionable);
  • Los pantalones largos protegen más las piernas (long trousers protect the legs better);
  • Los pantalones tejanos están muy de moda (jeans are very much in fashion);
  • Los pantalones vaqueros están muy de moda (jeans are very much in fashion);
  • Ha llegado la hora de ponerse los pantalones (the time has come to take control of the situation)
